Transforming donor experiences in the age of AI
Why the future of fundraising depends on thoughtful digital experiences, not just AI adoption.
Just when you think you've finally caught up, the digital landscape changes again.
Digital transformation never really ends. Charities spend months, sometimes years, improving websites, integrating systems and refining supporter journeys. By the time one project is complete, donor expectations have already evolved.
AI didn’t create that challenge, but it sure-as-hell accelerated it.
From personalised content and instant answers to smarter search, AI is already shaping what people expect from the organisations they engage with. The 2025 Charity Digital Skills Report found that 76% of UK charities are already using AI tools, while many more are exploring how it fits into their wider digital strategy.
But using AI should never be the goal in itself. The more important question is how it can create a better experience for supporters. Can it make giving easier, help people find information faster, or support more relevant follow-up after someone donates?
Technology has always been most valuable when it removes barriers, simplifies journeys and helps people achieve what they came to do. AI is no different. Supporters do not donate because a platform uses AI. They donate because the experience feels simple, intuitive and trustworthy.
Every interaction matters
A donation often begins with emotion, but whether it is completed depends on the experience that follows. Donors are used to fast, intuitive digital journeys in almost every area of their lives, from online checkouts and mobile banking to supermarket apps and instant payments. Research from Baymard Institute found that the average online cart abandonment rate is around 70%, with common reasons including complicated checkout processes, forced account creation and concerns around trust. Charities are not online retailers, and donating is not the same as checking out, but the expectation is similar. Once someone has decided to act, every unnecessary click, slow-loading page, lengthy form or unclear message creates more risk that they’ll drop off.
AI is adding another layer to those expectations. Supporters are becoming used to faster answers, more relevant content and digital journeys that feel increasingly tailored to their needs. That does not mean every charity needs an AI-powered donation platform. It means charities need to understand where AI could genuinely improve the donor experience, whether that's explaining how donations are used, summarising complex information such as annual reports, or answering supporters' questions in a way that's relevant to what they're trying to achieve. Great donor experiences still come down to thoughtful design and intuitive functionality. They remove unnecessary effort and make it as easy as possible for someone to give when they feel inspired to do so.
Accessibility improves AI discoverability
Accessibility is no longer just a compliance exercise. Clear, intuitive and well-structured content helps supporters find what they need, but it also helps search engines and AI-powered search tools understand your organisation and show it in relevant results.
Google Search Central explains that the same best practices used for search also apply to AI features such as AI Overviews and AI Mode. For charities, that means clear headings, descriptive content, simple journeys and pages that answer real supporter questions are becoming even more important.
In the age of AI, accessibility is not a nice-to-have. It is fundamental to being found, understood and trusted.
Trust matters more than ever
AI has made it easier than ever to create content, images and campaign materials at speed. But for charities, authenticity is everything. Research referenced by Bond found that when charities and not-for-profits used AI-generated imagery, much of the public response focused on whether the images were real rather than the issue itself.
That does not mean AI has no place in charity communications, but it does need careful consideration. Real photos, genuine stories, clear captions, names and recognisable scenarios can do far more to build trust than imagery that feels polished but disconnected from the real world.
That same trust needs to continue through the donation journey. Supporters want confidence that they are giving to the organisation they trust. Redirecting them to a disconnected third-party donation platform can weaken that confidence at the very moment they have decided to give. Every interaction should reinforce your brand, reassure supporters and strengthen the relationship you have worked so hard to build.
Every donation starts a relationship
A donation is rarely the end of a supporter journey. More often, it is the beginning of one. The most effective donation platforms do not work in isolation. They connect with your CRM and wider digital ecosystem, giving your team the insight to understand supporter behaviour, personalise future communications and encourage repeat giving.
Used responsibly, AI can build on that insight. It can help charities identify patterns in supporter behaviour, segment audiences more effectively and personalise follow-up in a way that feels relevant rather than generic. The aim is not to automate the relationship, but to help charities communicate with more care, timing and understanding after someone donates.
The value of a donation is not measured by a single transaction. It is measured by the lifetime value of a supporter. A donation platform should not simply process payments, it should help build lasting relationships.
It doesn't always mean starting again
Creating better donor experiences does not always require a major digital transformation, or an AI tool for the sake of it. Sometimes the biggest improvements come from making the donation journey faster, simpler and more intuitive. The real opportunity is to use technology thoughtfully, whether that means AI, CRM integration, improved UX or a better donation platform to reduce friction, build trust and strengthen supporter relationships.
At Ten4, we help charities improve digital experiences at every stage of their journey. Whether you need a simple, low-cost donation platform that integrates with your existing website, or a wider transformation programme covering discovery, UX, CRM integration and development, we will help you identify the right approach for your organisation.
Every charity is different. But every donor deserves a great experience.
If you're reviewing your donation experience or exploring how AI could support your wider digital strategy, we'd love to start a conversation.
