The brief

The P&O Cruises Memorable Moment Award is the only category voted for by the public at the BAFTA Television Awards. Broadcast on BBC One in the UK, the show needed a voting platform that could handle huge surges of traffic, protect personal data, and give every viewer an equal opportunity to take part. They turned to Ten4 to design, build and host it.

Building for scale, security and trust

The voting period attracts thousands of visitors an hour, often arriving in unperdictable surges. We architected high-availability hosting and carried out load testing to ensure it could withstand intense traffic without disruption. Behind the scenes, we placed the highest priority on protecting personally identifiable data. GDPR compliance, secure transfers to BAFTA’s adjudication partner Civica, and rigorous code review ensured privacy and trust at every stage.

Inclusive design at the core

We built the site to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA accessibility standards, allowing the widest possible audience to participate. From best-practice layouts to compatibility with assistive technologies and full transcripts of the nominee videos, the platform was designed for inclusivity as well as usability. By embedding accessibility from the start, we helped BAFTA ensure that no fan was left out of this defining cultural moment.

Collaboration under pressure

Awards projects (especially those attached to TV broadcasts) come with immovable deadlines, so collaboration and precision were essential. We worked closely with BAFTA and Civica to a riourously planned schedule of works to ensure delivery on time and thorough pre-launch testing. Daily analytics reporting kept everyone aligned and confident that the system was performing as expected.

Measurable impact

The platform delivered as expected, enabling audiences across the UK to cast their votes securely and without interruption. Its success was reflected in sponsor confidence: P&O Cruises renewed their support the following year, and was rewarded with both voting numbers and marketing consents doubling on the first year.

A repeatable model for high-profile engagement

The BAFTA voting platform is a case study in how Ten4 delivers prestigious digital experiences under pressure. By combining stability, security, accessibility and collaborative project management, we created a system that performed flawlessly at scale and delivered real value to all stakeholders. The same approach can power any high-profile, high-traffic public engagement platform.
